Files that are sent over the internet can implement rights management services protection in multiple ways. Several types of files support RMS natively by having RMS encoded directly into the file format. At the same time many file types do not support Azure Information Protection natively. In such case information in the original file is encoded and RMS header is added to the file. To differentiate the RMS encoded files their file extension is prefixed with letter "p". Below is a list which specifies most frequent RMS protected files and their modified extensions.
In order to open files above you need to download Microsoft Azure Information Protection viewer application on your device. Please note that you will need to sign in with your account in order to verify RMS permissions on the file.
Open Office XML files support RMS protection natively. This includes .doc, .docm, .docx, .dot, .dotm, .dotx, .potm, .potx, .pps, .ppsm, .ppsx, .ppt, .pptm, .pptx, .vsdm, .vsdx, .vssm, .vssx, .vstm, .vstx, .xla, .xlam, .xls, .xlsb, .xlt, .xlsm, .xlsx, .xltm, .xltx, .xps formats.
